How should PCB be moisture-proof and dustproof?

Standard controllers work fine in normal indoor settings. But in high humidity or dusty conditions, moisture and contaminants can sometimes lead to corrosion or short circuits over time. That's where conformal coating comes in.

Two Common Protection Options
Traditional conformal coating involves applying a thin protective layer—usually acrylic, silicone, or polyurethane—that conforms to the board's components. It creates a barrier against moisture, dust, and even some chemicals. Silicone-based coatings, for example, can typically handle temperatures from -60°C to 200°C, which is why they're common in automotive and industrial settings.
Nano coating is a newer approach. It's an ultra-thin, molecular-level layer that repels water without adding noticeable thickness or weight. This can be particularly interesting for compact designs where space is tight, or for applications where traditional coating might interfere with connectors or test points.
What to Consider
The right choice depends on your actual environment. Occasional condensation? Light dust? Or continuous humidity with conductive particles?
For moderately challenging conditions, conformal coating offers good value. For extreme environments, potting might be worth exploring.
The important thing is matching the protection level to your actual use case. Not every controller needs coating, but for those operating where humidity and dust are genuine concerns, it's worth having the conversation with your supplier about what's possible.
