When designing PCBA for water heaters or hot-water circulation pumps, the environment is demanding—heat and moisture are always present. Conformal coating is the go-to protection, but material choice matters. Acrylic is common and easy to apply, while polyurethane tends to offer better resistance against humidity and chemicals. Neither is universally superior; it depends on your specific conditions.
Thickness is another factor. IPC guidelines often suggest a dry film thickness around 50µm or more, but going too heavy may stress components. A balanced approach usually works best. For reliability verification, the double-85 test (85°C/85%RH) for 500 hours is frequently used to assess moisture ingress over time. It’s a practical indicator of how well the coating might perform in real-world use.

Beyond material and thickness, the actual coating process itself deserves attention. Uniform application, proper curing, and thorough inspection can significantly affect the final protection level. Even the best coating can fall short if coverage is uneven or if contaminants remain on the board prior to coating. Regular quality checks during production—such as thickness measurement and visual inspection under UV light—help maintain consistency and catch issues early.
MTBF reports are sometimes requested as well. Coated boards often show improved MTBF in harsh environments, but these figures are statistical estimates—not guarantees. They offer useful context, but shouldn’t be the sole basis for decision-making.
In the end, there’s no perfect formula. The right coating, thickness, and testing protocol depend on your application’s actual operating profile and performance expectations. A thoughtful selection process, combined with consistent process control, tends to pay off over the long run.
